Our Editorial Policy: Sources and Clear Limits

Good information should explain its sources, its assumptions and its limits. Here is how this website approaches financial education and how you can flag a concern.

Start with the reader’s question

Our guides are designed around real decisions: understanding a proposal, comparing alternatives, preparing a budget and knowing what to ask a Licensed Insolvency Trustee. We aim to explain both potential benefits and important obligations. A lower monthly payment alone does not tell the whole story.

Use sources readers can check

For Canadian insolvency rules and processes, we prioritize the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. For credit reporting, counselling and household money topics, we use Financial Consumer Agency of Canada guidance where relevant.

Links appear beside important claims and in source lists. A commercial source may be cited where the specific claim originates there, with qualifications. We do not treat a competitor’s marketing claim as proof that a result is typical or available to everyone.

How AI is used

This website uses AI assistance for drafting, design, coding and original editorial illustrations. Source checking and implementation checks are part of the publishing workflow, but those checks are not a substitute for professional financial or legal review.

Illustrations and AI-generated lifestyle photographs are conceptual. They do not depict actual clients, endorse a financial outcome or establish the qualifications of a professional. Any illustrative calculations or hypothetical situations are labelled accordingly.

Dates, updates and corrections

A publication date tells you when a page was released. Source-check dates identify the version of guidance consulted during preparation. A date does not guarantee that every rule remains unchanged. If a material correction is made, the affected explanation and date will be updated.

To flag an issue, use our contact form. Include the page address, the sentence in question and a supporting source if you have one. Please do not include personal financial documents.

Commercial interests and advice

ConsumerProposal.ca is intended to support disclosed professional referrals. Read our referral disclosure for the current arrangement. Contact requests currently reach the website team, not an LIT.

Our content cannot evaluate your income, assets, debts or legal circumstances. A comparison guide or calculator is a preparation tool, not a recommendation to file a proposal or bankruptcy.

Clear about our role. ConsumerProposal.ca is an educational publisher, not a Licensed Insolvency Trustee. This page provides general information, not advice for your circumstances. Read our referral disclosure.
